Liverpool (The Reds) Football Club History
- March 15, 1892 - John Houlding decided to form his own football team. John Mc Kenna became a director of Liverpool Football Club.
- September 1, 1892 - the club beat Rotherham Town 7-1 in a home friendly game. The next 8-0 victory was a match against Higher Walton at Anfield.
- 1893 - at the end of the season Liverpool became champions. They also defeated Everton 1-0 in the first Merseyside derby. After the 1893 Liverpool Senior Cup final the team was elected to the Football League. The team were promoted to the First Division.
- 1898 - 1899 - the club became runners-up of the First Division.
- 1900 - 1901 - the first grate success. Liverpool football club won the First Division.
- 1906 - the second victory of the First Division title. The capacity of the stadium was increased.
- 1914 - the first FA Cup final. George V attended this game that was the last at Crystal Palace. The Reds lost to Burnley 0-1.
- 1915 - after a British football betting scandal four Liverpool players were banned.
- 1921 - 1922, 1922 - 1923 - two season running the club were champions.
- June, 1936 - George Kay was appointed as a manager.
- September 2, 1936 - the beginning was poor: a 2-6 defeat at Portsmouth's Fratton Park and a 2-5 defeat at Brentford. The team finished this season in 18th place in the First Division.
- 1937 - 1938 - the season started from a 1-6 defeat at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge. At the end the club finished in 11th position. Alf Hanson became a top scorer. He scored 14 league goals.
- 1938 - 1939 - the results of this season were the same with the results of the previous one. The top scorers of the season were: Berry Nieuwenhuys, Willie Fagan and Phil Taylor. Bob Paisley and Billy Liddell joined the club.
- 1946 - 1947 - after the war the squad of Liverpool was in good physical shape in comparison with theirs competitors. They won four games from the first seven matches. The most vivid victory was a 7-4 game against Chelsea.
- May 31, 1947 - the Reds won a 1-0 game against Wolverhampton Wanderers and became champions for a 5th time. The top scorers were Jack Balmer and Albert Stubbins with 24 league goals each.
- 1950 - the team reached the FA Cup. Unfortunately they were defeated 2-0 by Arsenal.
- January, 1951 - Don Welsh took over a post of manager. He signed new players, among them were Alan A'Court. Nevertheless the club was relegated to the Second Division for the first time in over 50 years.
- 1956 - the team was almost got a promotion. In spite of this Don Welsh was replaced by Phil Taylor.
- 1957 - Liverpool finished in third position and fourth the next season.
- 1959 - the club was beaten by non-League Worcester City.
- December, 1959 - Bill Shankly became a new manager of the club. He had released twenty four players within a year. Ian St John, Ron Yeats, Roger Hunt, Ian Callaghan, Gerry Byrne – joined the team.
- 1961 -1962 - the Reds won the Second Division championship and got a promotion.
- 1963 -1964 - Liverpool became champions of the First Division.
- 1965 - they won the first FA Cup trophy, beating over Leeds United 2-1 at the final game.
- 1965 -1966 - the club won Division One. They reached the European Cup Winners, but were defeated 2-1 by Borussia Dortmund. Emlyn Hughes, Ray Clemence and Kevin Keegan were signed.
- 1973 - the Reds became champions of the First Division and also won the UEFA Cup.
- 1974 - one more FA Cup victory. The club beat Newcastle United 3-1.
- 1974 - 1975 - Bob Paisley appointed as manager.
- 1975 - 1976, 1976 -1977 - the team won the First Division.
- 1977 - for the first time in their history the club won the European Cup, beating Borussia Moenchengladbach 3-1 in Rome.
- 1977 - 1978 - the Reds defeated FC Bruges 1-0 and won the European Cup.
- 1978 - 1979 - the club became Division One champions. The team had 68 points.
- 1979 - 1980 - one more league title.
- 1981 - the club won the European Cup, beating Real Madrid 1-0. Alan Kennedy scored the unique goal. They also became World Club Championships runners-up.
- 1981 - 1982 - the league was won by eleven points. Graeme Souness, Ian Rush, Alan Hansen and Kenny Dalglish were the stars of that time.
- 1982 - 1983 - Division One champions.
- 1983 - Joe Fagan took over a post of manager.
- 1983 - 1984 - due to Joe Fagan and his high quality squad this season was prominent for winning League Cup, League Championship, European Cup. Ian Rush became a prolific goalscorer.
- 1984 - 1985 - Liverpool became runners-up of the First Division and European Cup.
- 1985 - Joe Fagan was replaced by Kenny Dalglish.
- 1985 - 1986 - the club won double FA Cup (beating Everton 3-1) and the league title. Kenny Dalglish was the top striker.
- 1986 - 1987 - unfortunatelythe club was defeated by Everton at the First Division final game. Also the team was beaten by Arsenal in the League Cup final. Ian Rush was sold to Juventus for a fee of £3.2 million.
- 1987 - 1988 - Liverpool won the First Division, beating Manchester United. They reached the FA Cup final but lost to Wimbledon 1-0.
- 1988 - 1989 - Ian Rush returned to the team. In the final match the club defeated Everton and won the FA Cup. They became only the runners -up of the First Division.
- April 15, 1989 - Hillsborough disaster: hundreds of Liverpool fans were crushed against perimeter fencing. The overcrowding was a failure of police control.
- 1989 - 1990 - the Reds won Division One title.
- 1991 - Graeme Souness was appointed manager.He sold many good players and brought in such young players as: Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Jamie Redknapp. The club won the FA Cup, beating Sunderland 2-0 at Wembley. The club finished in 6th position in the FA Premier League.
- 1994 - Liverpool lost to Bristol City in the FA Cup.
- 1994 - Graeme Souness was replaced by Roy Evans.
- 1993 - 1994 - the team finished in 8th place. Robbie Fowler became PFA Young Player of the Year, scoring 29 goals.
- 1994 - 1995 - the Reds defeated Bolton Wanderers 2-1 in the final game and won the League Cup. They also finished 4th in the Premiership.
- 1995 - Stan Collymore was signed for a record fee of £8.5 million.
- 1995 - 1996 - the team finished third. In the FA Cup final they lost 1-0 to Man United. Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler and Jamie Redknapp joined the club.
- 1996 - 1997 - Liverpool took the 4th place. In the semi finals of the Cup Winners Cup they lost to Paris St Germain.
- 1997 - 1998 - the club finish third in the Premiership. Michael Owen was taken to the team. He was awarded the PFA Young Player of the Year Award.
- 1998 - 2004 - Gerard Houllier became a new manager.
- 2000 - 2001 - this season was prominent for winning treble od the FA Cup (beating Birmingham City on penalties ), League Cup (beating Arsenal 2-1) and UEFA Cup (beating Alavés 5-4) . The Reds also won FA Community Shield and European Super Cup. Changes in the squad that consisted of: goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek, defender and captain Sami Hyypiä , young midfielder Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen 's strike partner Emile Heskey.
- 2001 - 2002 - Liverpool finished Premiership runners-up.
- 2003 - the club won the FA Cup.
- 2004 - Rafael Benitez took over the managerial reigns. The team finished fifth in the Premier League, but at the end of the season they won the European Cup final in Istanbul.
- 2005 - Liverpool F.C. became UEFA Champions League and they also won European Super Cup, beating CSKA Moscow 3-1. The Reds represented UEFA in the FIFA Club World Championship 2005. The final match against São Paulo that took place in Japan was decided by a single goal scored by São Paulo midfielder Mineiro.
- February 18, 2006 - The Reds defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Anfield. It was the first team's victory over Manchester United since 1921. The 7-0 win over Birmingham City F.C. was the club's biggest away victory in the FA Cup.
- April 22, 2006 - Liverpool defeated Chelsea 2-1 in the semi-finals. In such a way they reached the final of the FA Cup and won the title, defeating West Ham United 3-1 on penalties. This season they got 82 points in the Premiership. It was the highest points total since 1988.
- 2006 - 2007 - the club beat Chelsea 2-1 and won the Community Shield.
